"Private Parts" makes it much more fun to watch Stern break the rules than to see him sweet-talk Alison (with a voice that can sound an awful lot like Alan Alda's) and apologize. (The right reaction shots make this one of the film's funniest sequences, rivaled by another bit in which Howard and his cronies sneak a list of off-limits dirty Howard is coaxing some listener into having sex with a radio speaker. And Alison always seems to be listening when, for instance, There's a lot to kid about, what with the way Howard winds up wearing his underwear in a bathtub with a naked porn star and then gets caught hiding the underwear from Alison, etc. Stern, who steps very easily into comic acting, has no trouble kidding with Ms. Luckily, it isn't long before young Howard experiences true love with the saintly Alison, played by Mary McCormack as helpmate rather than a doormat. When he tries to date a blind woman, she gropes his face, feels his nose, then decides she has a lot of reading to do. That's for sure.) This persona turns out to be self-deprecating in veryįunny ways. ("For this movie, you gotta suspend disbelief," he tells the audience. Soon Stern is playing himself as a comically gawky 6-foot-5-inch college student. Stern's racial wisecracks are among those (Apparently "don't be a moron" was a favorite endearmentįrom Stern's father.) Then the boy learns about radio, puts on a smutty puppet show for a group of the elderly and survives high school in the tense racial climate of Roosevelt, N.Y. The film's depiction of Stern's humble beginnings actually owes a lot to Woody Allen, with scenes of a bright, nerdy little boy gaping at his relatives in disbelief. To the "Wayne's World"-Jim Carrey audience, though it's not a comedy for kids unless they're really big kids, like Stern.

That tactic so successfully takes the sting out of "Private Parts" that the movie develops real sunniness while delivering the insults and innuendoes that are the backbone of Stern's show. Thanks to sharp editing and surprisingly strong comic timing, the film puts less emphasis on the Stern raunchiness than on how his wilder routines Thomas does the film a favor by keeping its leering to a bare minimum, no pun intended. Thomas, with the help of her tirelessly hammy and good-humored star, turns Stern into the biggest, dorkiest Brady imaginable and also a take-no-prisoners broadcaster making a beeline for the top. "Private Parts" has been very cleverly coaxed from Stern's funny, crude, self-promoting best seller by Betty Thomas, director of "The Brady Bunch Movie" and the HBO film "The Late Shift," about the Leno-Letterman In this sure-fire hit comedy, a cheery autobiographical gloss on the Stern legend, our hero is a great friend, wonderful husband and broadcasting pioneer, the guy who saw the fun in flatulence long before any other broadcaster would dare.Īmazingly, this all works, even if some of it looks about as authentic as Stern's movie hair.
